Custom electronics development typically moves through several phases: an initial analysis and feasibility study, circuit and PCB design, prototype manufacturing and bring-up, testing and any necessary revisions, and finally preparation for production. The length of each phase varies from project to project.
What affects the timeline the most
Complexity of the requirements. A simpler device built on proven components can be designed faster than one with non-standard requirements, which needs more room for experimentation and concept validation.
Component availability. Lead times for certain electronic components can vary and affect when the first prototype can be assembled and tested.
Number of prototype iterations. The first version of a PCB rarely gets everything right. One or more revisions are a normal part of development, and each one involves manufacturing, assembling, and testing a new batch of samples.
Certification requirements. If a device needs to pass CE or FCC certification, time needs to be set aside for preparing documentation and for the testing itself, which follows on from completed development.
Scope of firmware. For devices with custom firmware or communication protocols, software development often runs in parallel with hardware, but final integration and tuning of both takes its own time.
