How does custom PCB design work?
From circuit diagrams and component placement to manufacturing files. Learn what makes a PCB functional, mechanically suitable and straightforward to manufacture.
By TechMountainDefine the board's role in the device
A PCB connects components, but it must also fit the complete product. Before layout begins, define board dimensions, mounting holes, connectors and available enclosure space. Supply voltages, current loads, signal types and operating conditions also shape the design.
The starting point may be an existing schematic, a board that needs redesigning or a functional brief. If there is no circuit design yet, that comes first. Expected quantities and assembly requirements should also be discussed early.
Check the schematic and components
The schematic describes the electrical connections and functional blocks. Power rails, protection circuits and interfaces must work together. Component selection includes package dimensions and possible alternatives as well as electrical performance.
Library footprints need checking against component documentation. Pad spacing, orientation and dimensions must match the physical part. An incorrect footprint can prevent assembly even when the circuit itself is sound.
Place components and route connections
Fixed mechanical features and related functional blocks guide component placement. Sensitive measurements, switching power circuits and power outputs have different layout needs. Programming and test points must remain accessible for bring-up and production checks.
Trace dimensions and routing depend on current, signal behaviour and circuit requirements. Layer count follows complexity and space constraints. The objective is a reliable, manufacturable board, rather than adding layers for their own sake.
Review the design before manufacturing
Electrical and design-rule checks help identify missing connections, clearance problems and dimensions that conflict with manufacturing rules. They do not replace a functional circuit review. Power, signal return paths, heat and mechanical assembly still need engineering attention.
Rules should match the PCB fabricator and assembly provider. Clear markings, accessible test points and adequate assembly space make the first prototype easier to build and simplify subsequent production.
Deliver manufacturing files and validate the prototype
The handover includes layer and drill data, a bill of materials and agreed assembly files. Source design files, schematics and mechanical drawings may also form part of the delivery. Agree the exact scope before work starts.
The first assembled board is powered up and measured. Function, consumption, heating and firmware integration are checked. These results determine whether the design is ready for further production or needs revision.
