Non-Invasive Fuel Flow Meter
ORLEN Unipetrol RPA s.r.o.
Assignment and problem
ORLEN Unipetrol RPA needed to measure fuel flow while filling railway tankers, under conditions for which no suitable ready-made device existed on the market. The environment and the requirements for safe, legally compliant operation were too non-standard for any off-the-shelf product to cover.
Our solution
We prepared a feasibility study for non-invasive fuel flow measurement as a basis for further development of the device. This included electronics design, experimental measurements on a tanker outlet model, a concept for data collection and transmission including the IT infrastructure design, and an analysis of the relevant technical standards and requirements for operation in an industrial environment.
Impact
The customer got a solid basis for deciding on further development, without having to build internal expertise across electronics, measurement, and legislation themselves. The proposed solution is also transferable beyond rail fuel transport – for example to pipeline infrastructure and energy operations.
